Flower Fairies

24/07/2023 | David Lloyd

Make fairy potions and meet Lady Lever Art Gallery’s resident fairy storyteller as part of the gallery’s Flower Fairies exhibition.

It's been available to view since April and runs until 5 November, with the exhibition celebrating 100 years of Cicely Mary Barker’s otherworldly fairy illustrations.

The seminal works feature our winged companions, flitting around botanically-perfect illustrations.

Barker was inspired over a century ago by books from Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, with her sketches and artworks displayed next to examples of herbarium sheets from National Museum Liverpool's collection.

"100 years on, the Flower Fairies continue to bring joy to people around the world," says Fiona Slattery Clark, curator of decorative art at National Museums Liverpool.

"These charming illustrations celebrate the beauty of nature and the innocence of childhood. They offer a unique combination of fantasy and naturalism, opening a window into a magical fairyland blooming with flowers."

Don’t believe in fairies? We’d suggest you take a closer look…
